Plant number: 1.038.120Also known as Alkanet, this historical perennial is a favourite of bees and butterflies. It is native to the Mediterranean but has been introduced in North America where it has escaped gardens and naturalized in British Columbia. Plants form upright stems of coarse and hairy light-green leaves. Short sprays of rich gentian-blue, bell-shaped flowers appear during late spring and early summer. Regular deadheading should encourage more buds to be produced. Best in full sun, this prefers a cool summer climate. Although short-lived generally, plants often self sow and continue to come back for many years. This particular cultivar has deep blue flowers and was first introduced into commerce in 1905. Might grow to 120cm (4 feet) so may require staking or some other support. Good deer resistance. Further details for |
