Cousins to regular old garden rhubarb, the ornamental forms are wonderful for their bold, architectural effect in the border. This selection also referred to Chinese Rhubarb has large, thick, rounded, dark green leaves. Bizarre spikes of pink to red flowers tower overhead in early summer. Requires a large growing area. Needs a moist site. The roots are used in Chinese medicine for treatment of a variety of medical conditions including constipation, diarrhea, peptic ulcers, immunosuppression, high blood pressure and cancer but CAUTION is recommended as leaves are poisonous.
