Crambe maritima

Blue Sea Kale

USDA Zone: 4-9

Plant number: 1.170.100

Although this species of Sea Kale forms sprays of creamy-white flowers, it really is grown more for the fantastic powdery-blue foliage. Leaves are large and cabbage-like, with ruffled edges that make this a superb textural plant. Especially useful in dry, sunny sites, the rock garden, or in the border. Said to be salt tolerant. In Europe this was once popular as a spring vegetable, the plants were covered with a clay pot in late winter, to blanch the emerging new foliage. Not easily divided, but any seedlings that appear may be moved while they are still small.
