Symphytum ‘Rubrum’

Ornamental Comfrey

USDA Zone: 3-9

Plant number: 1.506.100

The Ornamental Comfreys are not widely known, but among them are some excellent groundcovers, such as this selection. Plants form a low, indestructible mound of hairy green leaves. Upright stems appear in late spring, bearing clusters of dark-red bells that the bees adore. Excellent under shrubs or trees. Can be clipped back after blooming in order to rejuvenate the foliage. Plants are easily divided in spring or early fall, and even pieces of broken-off root will probably grow successfully. This appreciates a rich, moist soil but will tolerate dry shade. CAUTION: Harmful if eaten.
